Director of Campus Safety

Whittier College, the only Hispanic-serving, national, select, liberal arts college invites applications for the Director of Campus Safety.

The Director of Campus Safety is responsible for leadership in the development and implementation of a campus-wide, comprehensive safety and security program to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Department achieves this mission by establishing, recommending, and enforcing related campus policies and providing educational outreach to College personnel and students.  The Director sets a positive tone for the department in fostering a sense of community with an emphasis on positive and proactive service interactions with all constituent groups.

The Director is responsible for staff recruitment, scheduling, training, supervision and evaluation, campus key and alarm control, oversight of fire safety preparedness and response, parking management, facility and property security, compilation of data and reports, budget planning and control, policy review and development, investigations, and general administration. Providing support services for special and regular events, the director works cross-functionally with the campus community. The director is responsible to provide leadership to the development and implementation of emergency protocols and procedures for campus emergencies and non-emergent situations utilizing NIMS and ICS and the delivery of campus wide alert notification/communication systems.  The Director acts the liaison with city, county, state and federal law enforcement officials.  The Director serves on the Student Life Early Alert Team.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree is preferred and a minimum of five years experience in increasing responsibility in supervising or managing a campus safety department or education public safety.

Proven training and management abilities.

Ability to interpret and apply applicable laws, rules and regulations, react effectively in emergency situations, communicate effectively orally and in writing, prepare reports and records,  work cross-functionally, work well with diverse groups and provide effective leadership.

AED, First Aid Certification.

Required Certifications:
P.O.S.T. Management Certificate or eligibility to obtain such certification within first year of employment or the Department of Criminal Justice Services DCJS course for Campus Safety Officers ICS training 100, 200, 700 and 800

Additionally 300 and 400 preferred Health Care Provider EMT or other First Responder Training preferred

Administrative proficiency in Microsoft Office
