MUKILTEO — A new police chief should be coming to town before New Year’s.

Chief Mike Murphy plans to retire by the end of December or early January, he said last month.

The city plans to accept applications for Murphy’s position through October, Mayor Joe Marine said Friday. It’s also advertising for candidates around the state.

“I’m looking for someone who is community-minded the same way I am,” Marine said. “It’s an exciting time for the department and the city.”

Next month, Marine and law enforcement officials from around the county plan to review the applications and narrow them down to five people to interview. They hope to bring about three before the City Council and go from there.

Marine has been meeting with Mukilteo police officers one-on-one to get their input on what they would like to see in the future, he said.

An ideal candidate will be good at working in collaborative ways with others and also have ideas on how to involve the police department in more regional law enforcement efforts, Marine said.
