Winter Haven has a new top cop.

In a 10-minute ceremony this morning at the Winter Haven Police Department, Gary Hester took the oath of office as city police chief.

City Manager Dale Smith administered the oath.

The ceremony began at 10 a.m. in the Community Room at the police department on Lake Silver Drive North.

It was a well attended ceremony, with standing room only in the second-floor Community Room.

Hester, who retired last week as chief of staff to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd – and after 31 years with the Sheriff’s Office – replaces Buddy Waters, who retired as Winter Haven police chief on July 30 following a long career with the department.

Capt. Charlie Bird has served as the city’s acting police chief the past two weeks.

See Tuesday’s print issue of the News Chief for more about this event and more photos, and check back with NewsChief.com for a video of the ceremony.
